Potassium acetate can be prepared by reacting a potassium-containing base such as potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate with acetic acid: CH3COOH + KOH → CH3COOK + H2O

As a substitue to calcium (Magnesium) chloride, potassium acetate is widely applied as deicer and snow-melting agent in runways of airport and other environmentally sensitive area due to its properties of being less aggressive on soils and much less corrosive to cement and underground foundry iron pipe. Potassium acetate is also employed as additive to oil drilling fluid; food additive, extinguishing agent used in class K fire etc.
