Preparation

Potassium Formate may be prepared by reacting a potassium-containing base such as potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate with formic acid: HCOOH + KOH → HCOOK + H2O

Application

As a substitue to calcium (Magnesium) chloride, potassium formate may be applied as deicer and snow-melting agent in runways of airport and other environmentally sensitive area due to its properties of being less aggressive on soils and much less corrosive to cement and underground foundry iron pipe.
